High and dry

While parts of England are flooded some areas of Scotland have been left high and dry

High and dry

While some parts of England and Wales are lying under several feet of water after heavy rain some areas of Scotland have seen very little rain so far in June.

A wee place in the west of Wales called Trawsgoed has been one of the wettest places in the UK with the rain gauge on site recording 139mm of rain so far this month. This is almost double the rainfall you would normally expect for the whole month at 77% above normal at present.

More than double the average rainfall for the whole of June has already fallen on most of West Sussex, which is normally one of the driest parts of the UK. Shoreham Airport, just west of Brighton has already seen 122mm this month which is well above the usual 58mm for the month.

Some of you will remember the soggy scenes from the Jubilee weekend in London, where at Hampstead there has so far been 112mm of rain, just short of double the usual rainfall for the month. The weather station only needs to record another 20mm to set a new record for June, which is likely with more wet weather in the coming days.

While low pressure systems have tracked to our south taking the rain over England, Wales, the Republic of Ireland and France the weather over Scotland has largely been under the influence of a ridge of high pressure. This has kept the weather much drier than elsewhere, especially in the north and west.

It's been a very dry start to June for most parts of the Northwest Highlands and the Western Isles. The weather station at Resallach in the Highlands has only reported 1mm of rain so far, which is just 0.9% of the norm for the whole month, so it will need to rain lots over the next few weeks if we've to get this closer to the average.

It's possible that this very dry start to June has contributed to the forest fire currently burning at Lews Castle just outside Stornoway.

The weather stations on Harris and South Uist have only recorded 4% of the norm for June so far with about 4mm of rain. Shetland is not too far off this with just 11mm so far and 18% of average.

Rainfall in Scotland is not expected to stay at this minute level with bands of rain moving across the country more frequently towards the end of the month while over southern parts of the UK it will become drier.
