Soggy Solstice

With rain heading towards Scotland it's looking like a soggy summer solstice is on the way.

Soggy Solstice

The sun reaches it's highest point in the sky on the summer solstice

Apart from the odd spell of pleasant sunshine inbetween bands of rain or showers it's not been the best of summers so far. The south-east of England is crying out for rain while here most of us are just crying out for a little summer love from Mother Nature.

Some of you may have had the BBQ and patio furniture out at the end of April and the start of May, but recently it's probably spent more time in the shed than out bathing in the sun.

This year's summer solstice, which falls on the 21st of June, is looking like a wet one with as much as an inch of rain possible in parts of Fife, the Lothians, Borders, Angus and Perthshire.

Sunset in Glasgow and Dundee will be around 10.10pm, while the Northern Isles, Western Isles and the north of the mainland see the sun setting about 10.30pm. There will be so much cloud around on Tuesday it's unlikely that the summer solstice sunset will be visible for most, unless you're a few thousand feet up and watching from an aircraft!

Unfortunately the outlook, give or take a few drier and brighter days, is still looking mainly unsettled and cool. At the end of the week there is a risk of touches of frost in some rural areas, not what you would normally expect at the end of June when minimum temperatures on average hover around 7-9C for many areas.

If you're looking for summer I'm afraid we'll need to wait a little bit longer... Keep your fingers crossed for July!
