Councillors in Edinburgh will face a second protest ahead of a key budget setting meeting on Thursday.

Members of the trade union Unison will hold a rally against service and jobs cuts and outsourcing.

Members who are off-shift, on leave or taking flexi-time will be outside the City Chambers ahead of the City Council meeting, which gets underway on Thursday morning. They will be representing a 9000 strong branch of public service workers.

The union's Edinburgh branch president, John Stevenson, said: "We are asking service users, community groups and the Edinburgh public to stand with us and fight for Edinburgh's services and Edinburgh's jobs.

"Edinburgh's services face a bleak and possibly irreversible future as they are cut to the bone or sold off to the lowest bidder with the lowest quality services. Meanwhile Edinburgh jobs will be lost.

"Those that are left will be hit by new pay and conditions being imposed, meaning many lower paid staff will lose out."

The City Council is expected to approve a series of controversial funding cuts on Thursday as officials fight to claw back a £27 million deficit.

On Tuesday, around 400 pupils and parents gathered to lobby against education funding cuts of £2 million.

Education leaders say they have fought to reduce the impact on school budgets, reducing the amount being slashed from 2.5% to one percent.

However, parents say the decision could lead to a reduction in specialist teachers and learning assistants.

Speaking ahead of Thursday's meeting, UNISON Edinburgh lead negotiator, Kevin Duguid, said: "These services are provided by people. People like home helps, social workers, road workers, environmental staff and workers in trading standards, education, early years and public safety.

"Some will be cut and some sold off to the lowest bidder paying even lower rates so they can take our taxes as profit. Cut the people and you cut the services, it is that simple".
