About Scottish Parliament

When the Scotland Act was passed in 1998, it led to the establishment of the first Scottish Parliament since 1707. Scotland's devolved government returned to power in May 1999 and the new parliament opened on July 1. Members of the Scottish Parliament set the laws on and write policies about areas ranging from health, criminal justice, education, economic development, transport, social services, agriculture and the environment. After five years in temporary headquarters, MSPs moved into their new parliament building, known as Holyrood, at an inflated price tag of £414million.
