About Hogmanay

Hogmanay is the Scottish term for New Year’s Eve, which is the last day of the year, December 31. A big celebration around the world, this day of the year is a particularly large event in Scotland, where revellers of all ages gather together to welcome in The Bells at midnight. Ceilidhs, parties and get-togethers of all sorts are very common, and it is a hogmanay custom to sing Auld Lang Syne, a traditional poem reinterpreted by Robert Burns which was later set to music, at these events at the stroke of midnight. Scottish Hogmanay celebrations are steeped in tradition and superstition. On December 31 it is traditional to clean your home from top to bottom, as it’s considered unlucky to welcome in the New Year in a dirty un-cleaned house. After midnight, the practice of first-footing – being the first person to cross the threshold of a friend or neighbour’s house, and bringing a gift such as coal, shortbread or whisky – is still common. And on New Year’s Day (or Ne'erday) itself, many people eat a meal of steak pie or tongue, washed down with a good dram of whisky! Many people also us this time of year to make resolutions to change their bad habits or make lifestyle changes for the year ahead.
